The House Slab Is Your Build’s Most Critical Pour
A concrete house slab is not just a floor. It is the structural foundation the entire build sits on, and the first major pour that sets the level and integrity of everything above it. An incorrectly specified slab type for the soil conditions, shortcuts on sub-base preparation, or a crew that does not work to the engineer’s drawings – these are the mistakes that show up months or years later as cracking, movement and expensive rectification work.
KMA has been pouring residential concrete house slabs in Sydney since 1999. We read the structural drawings before quoting. We pour to specification. We do not leave until the slab meets the tolerances your certifier requires. If the pour does not meet those tolerances, we address it before we leave.
Raft Slab or Waffle Pod – What Does Your Site Need?
Your structural engineer specifies the slab type based on your site’s soil classification under Australian Standard AS2870. The classifications and their typical slab implications are:
A and S class soils have slight to minimal reactivity – waffle pod slabs are generally suitable.
M class soil has moderate reactivity – the most common classification across Sydney’s established suburbs and new estates. Waffle pod slabs are typically used on M class sites.
H and H2 class soils have high reactivity – significant ground movement is expected. A raft slab is the standard specification for H class sites.
E class soils have extreme reactivity – a raft slab with additional deep piers is typically required.
A raft slab is a fully reinforced concrete slab poured as a single rigid unit on prepared ground. It incorporates edge beams and internal stiffening beams that distribute the structural load across the full slab footprint, making it resistant to cracking and foundation movement on reactive or unstable ground. It is the correct specification for H and E class sites, sloping blocks and areas with known ground movement risk.
A waffle pod slab is constructed on a compacted sand bed with polystyrene pods placed in a grid pattern. Concrete is poured around and over the pods, creating a ribbed underside that reduces material volume while maintaining structural strength. It is faster to install and more cost-effective than a raft slab on flat, stable M class or lower ground – the standard choice in new housing estates across western Sydney including Marsden Park, Box Hill, Riverstone, Schofields and Oran Park.
KMA pours both types to engineer-certified specifications to a minimum N25 concrete strength grade, coordinating directly with your structural engineer and certifier across all of greater Sydney.
Types of House Slabs We Pour Across Sydney
Single Dwelling House Slabs
New residential builds across greater Sydney. Coordinated directly with your builder and building certifier so the slab is ready for frame on schedule.
Dual Occupancy and Granny Flat Slabs
Dual occupancy pours require precise scheduling against council approvals, engineer drawings and builder programmes. KMA manages this coordination directly – your programme does not slip because of us.
Duplex and Triplex Slabs
We regularly work with builders on duplex and triplex slab pours across Sydney – both Torrens title and strata subdivisions – working to engineering specifications and tight construction timelines where multiple slabs may need to be poured in sequence.
Suspended Slabs
Suspended slabs are heavily reinforced concrete slabs not in direct contact with the ground, forming floors above ground level or above basement levels in multi-storey residential construction. KMA pours suspended slabs to strict structural engineering specifications – coordinating form stripping schedules with your builder to ensure propping is maintained until the structure achieves design strength.
Basement Slabs
Reinforced concrete basement slabs forming the foundation of floors and structures above. We coordinate closely with your structural engineer and waterproofing contractor on concrete mix specification for below-grade moisture exposure and waterproofing membrane compatibility before any pour proceeds.
New Estate Concreting Sydney
Extensive experience across western Sydney’s growth corridor – Marsden Park, Box Hill, Riverstone, Schofields, Oran Park and Kellyville. We understand the soil classifications and builder programme requirements specific to these estates, where waffle pod slabs on M class soil are the standard specification and construction timelines are tight.
What Does a House Slab Cost in Sydney?
The cost of a concrete house slab in Sydney depends on several factors that vary from project to project:
- Slab type – Waffle pod slabs are generally more cost-effective than raft slabs due to reduced excavation and material requirements
- Block size and shape – Larger or irregular sites require more formwork and reinforcement
- Soil classification – Reactive or sloping sites require additional sub-base preparation, deeper footings and heavier reinforcement
- Site accessibility – Limited access may require concrete pumping, which adds to the overall cost
- Reinforcement specification – Your engineer’s drawings determine the steel mesh or bar layout, cover depth and slab thickness
KMA provides clear, itemised quotes based on your engineer’s drawings and actual site conditions before any work begins. The price we quote is the price you pay – no variations you did not agree to.
Australian Standards Compliance
All residential house slabs in NSW must comply with Australian Standard AS2870, which covers the design and construction of residential slabs and footings including soil classification requirements for both raft and waffle pod construction. AS3600 governs the concrete structure itself – mix strength, reinforcement specification and construction tolerances – from design through to completion.
Failing to meet these standards means your slab fails the building inspection – the first structural item on your certifier’s checklist. KMA provides the compliance documentation your certifier requires on every residential slab pour and has worked to both standards since 1999.
