Concrete Driveways Sydney
Your driveway is the first thing people notice about your property and the last thing most homeowners think to budget properly for. A concrete driveway installed correctly by an experienced team lasts 30 to 40 years. One installed on a poor sub-base or with the wrong thickness cracks within years and costs more to fix than it did to build.

Concrete Driveway Finishes – What Each One Actually Involves
Choosing a driveway finish is not just about how it looks on day one. It is about how it performs under daily vehicle traffic, how it weathers Sydney’s climate and how much upkeep it requires over the years. Here is an honest breakdown of each finish KMA installs:
Plain Brush Finish
A steel brush dragged across the surface before the concrete sets creates a textured, slip-resistant finish that performs in all weather. It is the most cost-effective and most widely installed concrete driveway finish in Sydney for good reason – straightforward to pour correctly, durable under vehicle traffic and genuinely low maintenance.
Coloured Concrete
Oxide pigment is blended through the full concrete mix before pouring, which means the colour runs through the entire depth of the slab rather than sitting on the surface. It does not peel, chip or fade the way surface-applied coatings do. KMA offers a range of colour options. Coloured concrete driveways are particularly popular across the northern suburbs and western Sydney where curb appeal adds real property value.
Exposed Aggregate
The top layer of concrete is washed back before it fully sets to reveal the aggregate below. The result is a naturally textured, slip-resistant surface with depth and visual interest that suits both traditional and contemporary homes. Exposed aggregate driveways hold their appearance over decades without the maintenance burden of pavers or stone.
Stamped Concrete
Patterns pressed into the concrete surface before it cures replicate the look of slate, cobblestone or pavers at a fraction of the installation cost and without the ongoing joint maintenance. Stamped concrete requires an experienced crew to install correctly – inconsistent timing or pressure during the stamping process shows in the finished result. KMA has the experience and the correct equipment.
How Thick Does a Concrete Driveway Need to Be?
Driveway slab thickness depends entirely on what will be using it. The single most common cause of driveway cracking in Sydney is concrete poured too thin for the actual load it carries.
For a standard residential driveway used by passenger vehicles, 100mm with steel mesh reinforcement is the minimum correct specification. If the driveway carries larger vehicles – utes, vans, trucks or heavy SUVs – 125mm is a safer specification. Properties that regularly have concrete trucks, skip bins or other heavy commercial vehicles accessing the site should be discussing 150mm with your concreter before the formwork is set.
KMA quotes the right thickness for your driveway based on what it will actually carry. Not a blanket figure designed to win the job cheaply.
Council Crossovers – We Handle the Paperwork
Any new or widened driveway crossing from your property to the road requires a council-approved crossover. Many homeowners only discover this mid-project when the council stops the work.
KMA manages the crossover application process across all Sydney metropolitan councils. We know what each council requires, we prepare the documentation and we build the crossover to council specification so that inspection approval happens without delays or costly rework. If your existing crossover does not meet your council’s current standards – which changes over time – we identify that before quoting rather than after the job starts.
Kerb laybacks, vehicular crossings and driveway extensions are all within scope. One call to KMA gets all of this managed under the same job.
When to Resurface and When to Replace
Surface cracks, staining and worn finish do not automatically mean a full driveway replacement. KMA assesses the existing slab honestly – if the structure is sound, resurfacing is a viable option that restores appearance at lower cost. If the slab has moved, heaved or cracked through the full depth, resurfacing is money spent on a failing foundation and replacement is the correct answer.
We give you the honest assessment based on what we find, not based on which option earns us more money. Call us out to look at your existing driveway before committing to either option.
What Drives the Cost of a Concrete Driveway in Sydney
The size of the driveway is the starting point but rarely the only cost driver. Finish selection makes a significant difference – stamped and exposed aggregate cost more than plain brush, which costs more than a reseal. Site conditions matter considerably – a sloping site needs more excavation and drainage work than a flat block. Council crossover requirements add scope if the current crossing needs to be replaced or widened. And access constraints sometimes mean concrete pumping is required to place the pour accurately.
KMA quotes are itemised so you can see exactly what you are paying for. The price quoted is the price paid.
